The 2007 Sidney Silverman Lecture “What’s Next For Labour’s Left?” is to be given by Jon Trickett, MP for Hemsworth, near Wakefield. John is a member of the Public Accounts Committee and is the Parliamentary spokesman for Compass, the Democratic Left organisation. Jon will discuss the direction of travel for Labour supporters who believe in socialist principles while having to operate in the Brown/Blair world. The lecture begins at 7:30 (with refreshments available from 7:00) on Friday 30th November 2007. At the recent Party Conference in Bournemouth Azhar topped the bill with a resounding 93% vote from North West delegates. After the vote Azhar said:" I was overwhelmed to receive such a high level of support. The NPF is now more important than ever in deciding the direction the Labour Party takes. I look forward to working with government, the and other party representatives as we develop policies for the future. "I shall of course be feeding ideas from Pendle Labour Party's local forums to the NPF, as well as reporting back regularly to local members."June 2007 Ian Tweedie stands in Barnoldswick's Craven by-election Pendle Labour Party has selected well-known activist, Ian Tweedie, as its candidate for the 28 June by-election in the Craven ward of Barnoldswick. Ian was a Colne Councillor from 1999 to 2002 but is standing in Craven because of his close family connections with Barnoldswick. He says "The Liberal Democrats run Barnoldswick like their own private enterprise on the back of generous amounts of government money. I want to join the Labour group on Pendle Council to provide some proper opposition." "There are any number of issues that need to be dealt with in the town - including rubbish collection, grot spots and anti-social behaviour. But my main concern, as a local bus driver, is the volume and speed of traffic in parts of Craven ward, especially at school arrival and home times. If elected I shall make this my top priority, as well as undertaking to resolve every problem brought to my attention." May 2007 Hazel Blears wins Pendle Labour vote Pendle Labour Party members have chosen Hazel Blears for their Constituency nomination to the post of Deputy Leader. At an all-members meeting on 30 May when the merits of the six candidates were discussed the Party Chair came out top on a preference vote. Pendle joins Burnley and 35 other Constituency Parties in giving their public support to Hazel Blears. March 2007 Sad Death of former Labour Councillor Ex-Pendle Councillor and current President of the Pendle Labour Party, Bryan Akrigg, sadly passed away on Monday evening in Cornwall following a long battle against illness. Bryan, who represented Brierfield ward between 1996 and 2002, was a former inspector on Burnley and Pendle buses and an extremely popular local figure, helping people from all walks of life. He had gone down to Cornwall to spend some time with family following treatment for cancer but was taken into hospital. Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, said “Bryan’s death is a sad loss not only to the Labour Party but to Brierfield. He was a dedicated individual who gave 100% to his duties as an elected member. He will be fondly remembered by all of us”. Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, added “Bryan was a
true friend of the party and we shall miss him greatly.” March 2007 Labour success in MUGA bid for Walverden Councillor George Adam hailed the successful outcome of many months' work to secure the £30,000 funding for a new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for the youngsters of Walverden. Councillor Adam said: "The plans are due to be passed on 3 March and tenders have been sent out, so the MUGA should be up and running by the summer." (Note: The MUGA in Walverden was given the go ahead by Nelson Committee on Monday Thu 8th Mar 2007. Also the one in Southfield St, Cloverhill side. This was due to Labour Councillors and Labour activists in Walverden, Cloverhill and Southfield.)
